Statement on the Noise Abatement Act – Pending Legislation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Negril Chamber of Commerce Statement on the Noise Abatement Act – Pending Legislation
Negril, Jamaica – June 2019:

The Negril Chamber of Commerce (NCC) would like to reiterate that we are not against entertainment in Negril. We recognize the vital role that it plays as a part of our Tourism Product in one of Jamaica’s major Tourist Destinations.

There have been differences between some Negril businesses and promoters due to noise disturbances however, the NCC wants to make it abundantly clear that we are certainly not against the considerate and responsible staging of events, festivals, parties and music in Negril. However, we recognize that greater cooperation and compromise is required on both sides for us to move forward as a community.

The NCC has been pushing for an entertainment zone for quite a long time and has been lobbying for it to be part of any new development order. We also believe that a properly designed and managed amphitheater at the proposed beach park will help to satisfy the needs of the community by providing options for entertainment events in a controlled and responsible way.

The NCC and various other stakeholders including the Negril Chapter of the JHTA, the Negril Police, the Negril Destination Assurance Council, the Negril Entertainment Association and the related Ministries of Government are working to arrive at an amicable solution to this issue soon.
We encourage responsible and respectful dialogue between stakeholders until we arrive at that solution.
